What are filter MERV ratings?
MERV ratings are Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values, or MERVs, report a filter’s ability to capture larger particles between 0.3 and 10 microns (µm).
This value is helpful in comparing the performance of different filters
The rating is derived from a test method developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The higher the MERV rating the better the filter is at trapping specific types of particles.
Average Particle Size Efficiency in Microns
MERV Rating Efficiency
1-4 3.0 – 10.0 less than 20%
6 3.0 – 10.0 49.9%
8 3.0 – 10.0 84.9%
10 1.0 – 3.0 50% – 64.9%, 3.0 – 10.0 85% or greater
12 1.0 – 3.0 80% – 89.9%, 3.0 – 10.0 90% or greater
14 0.3 – 1.0 75% – 84%, 1.0 – 3.0 90% or greater
16 0.3 – 1.0 75% or greater
All furnace filters require regular replacement to function properly. Follow the manufacturer’s or filter suppliers recommendations on maintenance and replacement.
How does a furnace filter help improve indoor air quality?
A furnace filter will help remove pollutants, VOC’s, pollen, dust and other particles from the air in your home. Over time dirt and pollutants start to build up and block the filters ability to clean the air, this is the reason it is important to regularly replace your furnace filter.

I’ve been buying these for years for the heat pump in my apartment, the price is very good, and I purchased MERV13 which only allows super small particles to go through, which is important as I have a son with asthma. The product is much cheaper than the equivalent brand name furnace filter.

So these filters work great, and they were a great price for what you get. The only catch is the size. A standard 16×24 filter is actually 1/4in smaller overall. This one, however, is 1/2in smaller. For me, this means the filter has 1/4in play left and right, front and back. Every time my fan would kick on, the filter would be sucked into place. When it was off, it would rest on the grill (my vent is on the ceiling). I ended up cutting a few inches out of the packaging box they came in to create a wedge. That little noise of it getting sucked up, then dropping back to the grill was annoying. I’d have given these 5 stars if they fit perfectly, but since they don’t, I only gave it 4. I’d still buy them again though.

Great filters, great price. Pay attention to the product specs. They are slightly under sized and state as much; but I overlooked it.
There’s a good reason they’re both listed as 16 x 24 but are actually (15 1/2) x (24 1/2) so don’t hold it against them, it actually makes sense and is highly dependent on the people who installed your AC unit whether these will leave a small gap or fit perfectly.

It’s an air filter and it filters the air, so it is doing it’s job. Is it really performing at a MERV 12 rating??? I don’t really know as I have no way to test such things but I have no reason to think that it is not. They are a good value, and as far as sturdiness I suppose it is as sturdy as an air filter needs to be. I’m not rating Accuracy because I have no way of testing that. I will buy again when the time comes.
